An Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
