Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
